on friday so the country was ready for it. >>> a week-long good-bye to former president nelson mandela begins today. president obama and three of his predecessors will be among the tens of thousands in johannesburg. nbc's ron allen is live outside of the former leader's home in soweto. ron, good morning. what is the latest you are seeing? >> reporter: richard, the celebration continues of the life of nelson mandela. there is grieving and mourning but the mood in this country has been upbeat and celebratory since the passing of mandela. yesterday a day of reflection. today perhaps a day of preparation for the huge memorial service set to take place tomorrow, tuesday, at the huge soccer football stadium here that seats 80,000 people. there will be hundreds of thousands of people perhaps millions lining the route trying to get a glimpse at this huge event. 50 or 75 or more leaders will be here. president obama, clinton, carter and bush, as well. all of this culminates sunday with the funeral. >> ron allen will be reporting for us throughout the process this week. >>> you heard it here, a

to south africa ahead after memorial to honor nelson mandela who died last week. officials expect thousands to fill a soccer stadium for tomorrow's memorial. the government says at least 53 dignitaries are expected including president obama and the first lady, presidents bush, clinton and carter, bonky moon and many more. president obama plans to speak. we are getting more information on mandela's final hours. a friend who saw him two hours before he died said he was sleeping peacefully, not on life support but clearly near the end. and i could see that he is different from the conditions i saw him earlier, that he is now giving up. >> hundreds of people attended a prayer service last night and there is another scheduled for tonight. >> it's 4:38. time to get a look at the faulk for this week. i was hoping for a warm-up. >> well, we've got one for you. it's just going to be very gradual. it's going to take a while before we return to the 60s. but they are on the seven-day forecast. and hey, we won't make you wait for it. it's scrolling at the bottom of the screen. temperatures this morning

obama and the first lady will be going to south africa on tuesday. and former presidents jimmy carter and bill clinton will also be going to south africa this week. nelson mandela will be laid to rest this week. charlene hunter-gault who worked for npr during nelson mandela's presidency, and from new york, special correspondent tom brokaw. here is tom back in 1990 interviewing nelson mandela after he was released from prison. it's a great photo. the reverend jesse jackson is here, one of the first people to greet mandela after he was released from prison. what a great day that was. we'll talk about it. and he wrote a book entitled "mandela's way." and charles ogletree who marched for mandela's freedom and subsequently met with him several times. welcome to all of you. it's a great privilege to have this conversation. i want to begin in south africa with charlene

want to turn now to south africa. a week of events celebrating the life of nelson mandela getting underway now. president obama and the first lady are heading there this morning to attend a memorial service tomorrow. they'll be joined by jimmy carter, bill clinton, and george w. bush. nbc's lester holt is in soweto with more on this. lester, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. what an emotional few days it's been. we're outside the mandela house. it's the house he came home to after his release from prison in 1990. a lot of folks will be lining up tonight for the privilege to be at the stadium and at the memorial service but like the 50 or 60 some odd world leaders coming, none of them were invited. this is going to be an event on a scale rarely seen in any country and it shows how beloved and respected nelson mandela was across this planet. this morning they are hard at work preparing johannesburg's 90,000 seat fnb stadium for tomorrow's public memorial. a potential security and logistics nightmare as scores of world leaders and luminaries ranging from heads of
